| - Can I give them no stars instead? I will never fly with them, will encourage everyone I know not to fly with them and will spread the word online as well.
United Airlines wins the prize for the least sympathetic airline, hands down. Last weekend my 12-year-old niece, who just lost her mother, was flying stand-by and unaccompanied from Cleveland to Los Angeles to come live with my family. She got bumped from her first flight and was poised to get bumped again, on the last flight out of Cleveland, unless we paid an outrageous, last-minute fare. We plead our case to everyone at United - the ticket agents on the phone, the agents at the counter at Cleveland Airport and finally to the management, but they refused to move her up on the standby list to insure she wouldn't be stranded or provide a discounted bereavement fare. They told us that there were 12 people on the standby list and only 3 open seats, and that employees had seniority on the list over my niece. She was in tears at the prospect of being kept off another flight and we were desperate to get her to LA but unable to pay for the ticket. Fortunately we had a good friend step in at the last minute to cover the inflated, one-way fare and they wouldn't even apply a credit for the amount already spent on the stand-by ticket.
The icing on the cake - there ended up being 3 empty seats on the plane.
I'm now reading that 1 in 3 consumer reports is about United Airlines, I can't say I'm surprised.

Please spread the word - United Airlines doesn't care about it's passengers and showed no sympathy to a little girl who had just lost her mother and was flying across the country by herself. United Airlines is heartless, only interested in their bottom line and will take advantage of its passengers whenever it can.
