  • I had a very unfortunate experience with this location and office manager John Broad. Prior to my appt I'd asked John on the phone approx how much he would charge per return. He said he was unable to give me an estimate but that I can see his pricing list posted when I arrive for my appt. He'd asked me to bring my last return with me as it was necessary to file my recent returns. I told him I didn't have it and he informed me I could easily pick it up at the local IRS office, no appt needed. I went to the IRS phoenix office as instructed by John only to find that office no longer accepts drop ins; an appointment must be made. So the next day, the same day as my appt with John, I went to the IRS Mesa office to request my return only to discover they no longer print returns. They gave me a form to fill out and they faxed it in for me and said I'd receive my return in 10 days. I told the lady at the IRS my situation and that my tax representative from H&R block requested it and asked if there was any way for him to get it sooner. She said no. I went from the IRS to the H&R block office for my appt and was greeted by John, a man easily in his 80s. I explained to him why I was unable to bring my prior return. He expressed his surprise as he was not aware of these new rules implemented by the IRS. While sitting at his desk I noticed his price list which stated he charges 100.00 per hour. I inquired about his fee and he said that would be waived after I filed my return with him at which point I would be charged the per return rate of 230.00 and up. I responded by saying that since I didn't have all my paperwork with me I'd prefer to come back as I wouldn't be able to file today and didn't want to be charged per hour in the meantime. He then told me to give him my tax information and he would start the clock now on the 100.00 per hour but that I won't have to pay it as long as I file my return with him. I restated that I would prefer to return when I have all my information so that I could be certain I could file with him as I didn't want to pay the 100.00 per hour and wait to be credited later. He said he, as a tax professional, could obtain my return immediately from the IRS. I asked him why he never mentioned that before and why, if that were true would the lady at the IRS tell me there was no way for him to obtain it any earlier than the quoted time of 10 days. He said he had his ways. I stated that I didn't want to be charged 100.00 an hour only to find out that he was not able to get the information. He started raising his voice to me and loudly declared he knew what he was talking about and the lady at the IRS was wrong. I politely told him he'd already given me incorrect information twice and I didn't want to pay him hourly to find out again that he may be incorrect. A lady came from around the corner and stated "John, let her come back when she has all her information". He raised his voice to the top of his lungs and told me to "get out of his office now!!!" He shouted several more times as I left. I've never been spoken to like that by anyone let alone a supposed 'professional'. I recommend that anyone seeing John for tax help ensure you get his price list prior to making an appointment with him as he may try to charge you from the moment you walk in otherwise.
