  • We've been coming here for maybe a dozen years, and we've had really good barbecue here, and the service has always been polite. I think their sauce is too thin and watery for my taste, but their ribs have always been very tender. We went in last night for dinner and to pick up a bottle of sauce to mail to relatives across country. The dinners no longer come with a roll, and I had just a few bites of the peach cobbler before throwing it away. It's always been a cooked cobbler with a little cinnamon, but now it's cold, uncooked canned peaches, no spice, mixed with a gummy pastry shell. The ribs were still as tender as ever. The main reason for my one star review is that when we went to buy a bottle of sauce, we didn't see any for sale. My husband asked if it was being sold in a store and the guy said A.J.'s had it but that he had a bottle to sell us. He charged us first, $6.99 plus tax, then said that he had hidden a stash of sauce in the back so his fellow employees wouldn't find it. We didn't know what that meant, but we waited while the guy was in the back for a few minutes. When he came out he handed my husband a bottle and we went out to the car, where I looked at it. It was unlabeled, unsealed and warm. Very warm. And sticky. I took it back in and said, "You just filled this, right?" He agreed. So I told him that we were sending it across country and that it might not be opened for weeks. I asked him if it was vacuum sealed (because of spillage and the fact that it was so warm and could breed bacteria). He smiled at me and said that yes, he had vacuum sealed it. Because I didn't want to send an unlabeled mystery bottle, we drove right over to A.J.'s and found Honey Bear's sauce on the shelf- same size, for $3.99. So why the price difference? When we got home we unscrewed the top on the bottle from the restaurant and of course, it was not vacuum sealed, he had lied. And he'd been so reluctant to have a couple of bucks walk out the door that he was willing to potentially get people sick.
