  • It seemed like Mad Hatter had a good idea... choose your base, your filling and your frosting. Unfortunately, there is a fundamental flaw in that equation. I went on a weekday afternoon and the place was empty. Immediately in front when you walk in are the unadorned cupcakes are in a display. There is a small paper to the left of the display that lists all the frosting and filling flavors. The first problem is that their cupcakes are... not pretty. It's easier to cover flaws with frosting, but since these ones are naked, you can tell that some of them baked up crookedly and some are larger (and lumpier) than others. This is forgivable if they taste good. I got the banana cupcake with peanut butter frosting and the coffee cupcake with mocha frosting. Here's where the problem was... The actual cupcakes tasted pretty good. They were moist (almost too oily - which is hidden by the fact that they use foil paper) and the texture was good. The problem is their frosting. Because their frostings are in their pastry bags sitting in little metal buckets, they are left out in room temperature for too long. I don't know if all their frostings are buttercream, but the frosting had separated. Eating it was like eating an oil slick. The cupcakes were packaged in little white cardboard boxes and there was instantly an oil spot where the frosting touched the box. yuck Sprinkles is every bit as fat-laden, but the difference is that you dont FEEL like you're tongue is coated in oil.
