| - We visited Hickory Grove Haunted Trail on Friday night and definitely enjoyed ourselves. It wasn't the scariest attraction we've ever been to, but it was pretty solid. What's most special about it is that it's entirely in the woods and that in and of itself is creepy; woods at night is not for the faint of heart. In fact, I would have preferred less campy predictable haunted house themes and more emphasis on the woods (like a Blair Witch type experience). I think that some of the cheesier props detracted from the scariness of the woods...less lighting would have been better too, but they probably need the excessive light to prevent tripping, etc. The lady at the ticket counter was almost comically rude, but otherwise the staff at Hickory Grove Haunted Trail were really friendly. Our "tour guide" was great! It would have been cool if the guide told more of a story of the woods and how it come to be so "haunted" throughout the walk, but otherwise they're doing a pretty good job. I would have liked to have experienced less chainsaws as well...my ears were ringing a bit by the end. The maze at the end was pretty terrifying; pitch black inside and very narrow. Even the big brave dudes in our group were creeped out, which was hilarious. Plenty of easy parking here and no long lines which can become a significant problem in my experience at these type of attractions. Overall we liked the experience but felt that it could use a few tweaks to modernize it and take it from scary to blood curdling. I believe the Hickory Grove Haunted Trail has been in operation for many years, so, that may have been what I was picking up on...1980's style haunted house vs. what today's Halloween enthusiast is looking for. I do have to give a shout out to the folks acting in the Deliverance style area; deep woods redneck wearing a very scary pig head (it actually looked real), serious deep south accents, and excellent rotting cabin scenery. An old timey record player with spooky banjo music would have taken that scene to absolute perfection, otherwise, it thoroughly creeped me out. Totally in keeping with this season's American Horror Story; My Roanoke Nightmare.
