So happy that there is a fully functioning pick your own farm so near to the city. I can only hope that residential developments don't soon take over this precious farm. I have very happy memories of first coming here with my family when I was a child. Back then, it seemed so rural and far away. Not much has changed (so it seems to me anyway) since I made my first visit. I can't remember if the Fun Farm Yard ($6 admission plus tax) was always there - it does look like fun on a summer day for young children. The Fun Farm Yard is located right near the Farm Market building at the entrance.
There are a variety of berries and vegetables you can pick when they're in season, though I've only ever gone for the strawberries. The fragrant smell of ripe strawberries ensconces you as soon as you near the fields. Parking is free on the dirt and grass areas. Just follow the signs once you enter the farm to find the pick your own area.
Tip: bring your own bucket or other hard container to save yourself the $3.50 for the reusable bucket you can buy at the cashier. Plastic bags and environmental bags are not permitted. Or, support the farm and buy the bucket! The teens that handle the cash are very polite.
The Farm Market has a selection of fresh herbs, plants, fruits and vegetables to buy if you're not inclined to spend time in the sun picking for yourself. They also have premade frozen dinner pies and such in the freezer. There are a lot of fresh pies, baked goods and sauces to buy as well. The Kawartha ice cream makes for a refreshing reward after a fun time picking your own produce. On the weekends, take a lunch break at the snack shack that serves up fries, hot dogs, burgers, etc. The canopied pinic bench seating area makes for a nice spot to eat and people watch.
