| - I was so impressed by Dr. Beckes and the way she handled my fearful dog, Galaxy.
Our previous vet and staff traumatized my pit bull to the point that she panics and starts barking whenever she sees someone in a white coat. I was concerned that, because of my dog's size (she's 75 pounds) and breed, the staff here would treat her the same way the previous vet office did.
But that wasn't the case at all. The tech was so sweet and calming, and Galaxy loved her.
When Dr. Beckes walked in, Galaxy immediately started barking, as expected. But Dr. Beckes surprised me by actually sitting down on the floor and just spending a couple of minutes talking to Galaxy and feeding her some treats. I was just stunned by that.
At first, Galaxy would barely get close enough to get the treats, and she flinched every time Dr. Beckes moved.
After a few minutes, though, Galaxy allowed Dr. Beckes to listen to her chest with the stethoscope. A few minutes after that, Galaxy was able to be restrained by me and distracted by the tech who had treats, and Dr. Beckes administered the necessary vaccines without incident.
Near the end of the appointment, Dr. Beckes needed to leave the room for a moment. When she came back, Galaxy didn't bark at all, and even readily walked to her, sniffing her shoes.
I know it wasn't the most efficient appointment, but it meant so much that they were willing to try to ease Galaxy's fear, rather than just slapping a muzzle on her and making it worse. They were focused on my dog's mental and emotional wellbeing, as well as her physical health.
And Dr. Beckes suggested a couple of things I can do at home to ease Galaxy's anxiety, such as getting her used to being touched on her paws, mouth, etc. She also suggested I bring Galaxy by once in awhile just to say hi and get some treats, so she begins seeing it as a positive place.
No it wasn't the most efficient way to do things, but they started the process of getting Galaxy past her fear, of solving the problem over the long term, and I appreciated that so much. I loved that they were willing to take the time to actually work with my dog, and were willing to adjust in order to make the experience a positive one in Galaxy's mind. I am so incredibly grateful for that.
I'm confident that, with this staff, Galaxy will soon be able to go to the vet without any anxiety at all, so that, God forbid, should she get injured or sick, the vet will be able to examine and treat her efficiently and effectively, and Galaxy won't have the panic on top of the stress of illness or injury.
I cannot say enough just how much I appreciate both Dr. Beckes and the tech (I didn't get the young woman's name). I was nervous coming in to this appointment, because of the experience at the last vet office, and also because Galaxy is so big and so scared, but now I know there was no reason to worry. Galaxy is in wonderful hands here.
