| - After talking to him for about 15 minutes at my scheduled appointment, for which I arrived on time and paid a $70 copay out of pocket about a surgery in which he'd be removing a large portion of one of my organs, Dr Simpson abruptly left the room and apologized to the patient next door for me being "a real chatterbox". That was absolutely the last straw for me and I switched surgeons that day. By my second visit with dr Simpson I was starting to get wary and feeling that everything with him was a one size fits all approach. I came to my visits prepared with well researched questions and concerns about my upcoming surgery and although he would answers my questions, his answers were very condescending and dismissive. I also became concerned that a lot of his answers seemed to be profit/money oriented rather than health centered. For example, when I asked him about band complications and revisions, he told me the band doesn't ever do any damage and the only reason you'd have to wait in between revisions is not to allow any ulcerations to heal but because surgeons want to be sure insurance will pay. There was a lot of this sort of, "that's not true, they only do x because they get paid more" type of responses which was really concerning because although I know I'm not anything near an expert, I did do a lot of research beforehand and read from well sourced studies (NIH, VA) and he seemed to be alone on the other side of the fence on every issue I asked him about.
I'm very happy I switched, my new surgeon is always erring on the side of caution to protect my health in areas dr Simpson seemed very lax about. If you'd like to understand what I mean, his pre and post op care instructions are on his website and you can compare them to anyone else's or just do a google search.
