| - Literally one of the best museum experiences I have ever had in my life. Not only did I get to learn more about music, culture, and traditions from around the world, I was also able to have a great deal of fun while doing it.
There are a variety of exhibits here including those categorized by continents and regions, musical styles, and of course, instruments. When you grab your tickets at the front desk, you are given an interactive audio set which you can wear throughout the museum. When you stand near designated areas marked by a music symbol, you can hear examples of the type of music or artist related to the exhibit. This is honestly wonderful because you really feel like you are being exposed to a range of cultures and emotions while literally just walking around and looking at different aspects of music within one building. One of the things I really enjoyed about this museum was that it had a good mix of instruments, audio, and actual clothing styles worn by the artists. It made me really feel as if I was getting a realistic view of how a certain type of music was expected to be experienced.
If you are interested in getting your feet wet with a new and exciting musical venture, there is definitely something for you here. The first floor has an interactive room where there are guitars, banjos, drums, gongs, etc. where you can go in and actually play a bunch of instruments. My favorite is definitely the theremin because I legitimately had no idea that it existed until I saw it in the museum. Perfect lead in to one of my favorite exhibits being that of Clara Rockmore, the amazing theremin player.
Overall, this museum is a great way to learn more about music and about the different regions of the world in general. It lets one observe how music is integral to life as we know it and shows us that we are all bound to one another by this dynamic movement that we refer to as music. It presents us with musical similarities while highlighting inherent differences and ultimately leaves us wondering how music can mean so many different things to different people.
Entrance charge for adults is $20 and frankly, it is worth every penny. You should definitely check out this museum even if you are just driving through the area.
