After coming here a few times in the past my friends and I visited last night to watch the Leafs game and we were very disappointed.
First off, there wasn't nearly enough staff to handle how many people were there (which was kinda busy but not packed). Because of this, we were practically ignored at our table and had to continually go up to the bar to place any drink or food orders. Can't really place much blame on the staff since there's only so many of them (I believe it was 2 servers and one person in the kitchen). Not even a designated bartender.
The worst of the whole experience came when we were settling up our bills. A friend of mine had ordered ribs and fries and was given a much larger portion than he was expecting. Whatever, he's never been there before, maybe it's correct. When paying the bill however, what was on the menu for $13-14 was actually about $22. When he asked about the discrepancy, he was told that what he was given was a different menu option for ribs and that the price on the bill was the price of what he was served. It seems like a mistake was made either by the server or the kitchen, and the customer has to pay for it?
Awful service and the inability/unwillingness to acknowledge when you've made a mistake will keep myself away from The Contender in the future. Which is a real shame considering I liked coming to this place.
Oh, and advertising behind the bar the dates the draught beer lines have been cleaned when most of the dates are about a month old at this point is pretty stupid and gross.
