| - Context: I have been practicing at The Clarity Centre several times a week since I moved here in September 2014. Before I moved to Ontario, I was teaching vinyasa classes at 3-4 studios in Denver, CO and had my choice of classes to attend. There was always a good class happening when I wanted there to be one. However, I have needed to focus on my psychology residency, which takes up a lot of time and doesn't pay super well. I decided the best thing to do would be to find a studio where I could practice consistently that was close to my home.
I go to this studio for a few reasons, but have largely found the vinyasa and hatha classes to be average. The Iyengar classes with Zhanna on Sunday morning and the Monday evening rope wall class are the main things that keep me coming back. Her classes break down the alignment to basic and intermediate poses in a way that always helps me to learn more about my body. She really helps me to engage my muscles more in each pose and work harder and with more strength. Unfortunately, she only teaches 2 classes a week, and in order to get an opportunity to learn for advanced Iyengar poses, I had to take extra workshops. I prefer to practice about 4 times a week, and finding other classes of interest has been more challenging.
I like the fact that there is a handstand class so that there is a dedicated time and space to work on handstands during a class with other people who are interested in doing that. However, is quite repetitive, and I wish there was a little more in the way of detailed alignment cues to help with what to do and what not to do to figure it out. Sometimes I really feel like I need to attend this class, and sometimes I feel bored with it. I have also appreciated that this studio has a discounted student membership. If you are looking for a deal, there's almost always s groupon available too. The staff are nice, have been quite tolerant of me rushing in at the last minute (see note about busy psychology residency above), and I've gotten to know some people who I see regularly there.
I was excited that they had a variety of offerings when I joined. I really wanted to learn aerial yoga, but that class was only briefly on the schedule during winter and then went away again. I only got to take one class. Spin is also a rarer offering; only a couple classes a week. They do have several kettle bell and Pilates classes a week.
The power vinyasa yoga classes occur almost exclusively in the hot yoga room. Now that it is summer, they've moved one class a week to the non-heated room. In general, there is a relatively equal balance of heated and non-heated classes, but it depends what time you want to attend class. However, there are few non-heated vinyasa or power vinyasa classes (2/week). I liked hot yoga during winter, but otherwise find it aversive.... Plus, I'm quite flexible already, and if you're flexible, the last thing need is the extra heat to make your muscles even looser, but I know that's not the case for the average bear. The hot yoga classes feel like more of an aerobic workout than anything else. They often have a core section consisting of crunches or leg lifts. The hatha non-heated classes stay longer in each pose, giving a bit more opportunity to build endurance and stretch out. In general, the teachers don't work towards a peak pose, and there is very little in the way of advanced content. Except for a couple beginner/basics classes a week, the classes are "all levels," which seems better for a casual or intermediate practitioner. I've repeatedly requested an advanced class be added to the schedule, but I guess I am not their typical clientele. I want to like it more than I do, and I appreciate the fact that I've been able to practice there and develop a yoga routine, but I often find myself wanting more. If you are a casual yoga practitioner in the Oakville area, this could be a great place for you though.
