  • Maybe my taste buds were sluggish today. Maybe I'm just a contrarian. I dunno, but I have a very different opinion from everyone else who has written a review. Normally, I don't snack between meals. But I needed to get a blood test next door and saw this big, beautiful new shop. I told myself that if I were in Italy right now, I would definitely be eating gelato. I always do. Solo Qui exudes warmth from the owners. It's clean and inviting. You can eat in or out on the patio. The prices are reasonable. So what was missing? Flavor! I was hankering for my usual, TiramisĂș, but they didn't have it. They were out of my next choice, Zuppa Inglese - it was in the machine being created. I tasted Fior di Latte, and it had no discernible flavor. Without tasting it, I ordered Stracciatella. The young lady (owner?) suggested I have the lemon (pie) with it, but I didn't think that would be a good combo, so I stuck with the single flavor. Pretty, with a little biscuit, just like in Italy. But I was so disappointed. The gelato seemed to lack any of the creaminess, that "mouth feel" that you get from a really rich gelato. The chocolate was also tasteless, except for it's resemblance to wax. I have never been known not to finish a cup of gelato, except in this case. My general rule of thumb is that if it's not delicious, it's not worth the calories. The gelato at the Red Rock buffet had gone way downhill, but the last time I was there, they had appeared to up the game. It pains me to say it, since I like nothing more than seeing a local business thrive, but THAT stracciatella was delicious. I've had gelato all over Europe, and in the very Italian Buenos Aires and italophilic Santiago, and other places, and sadly, I can't recommend Solo Qui. If you don't agree with me, well, that's the way the biscuit crumbles. Update: A small piece of the hard chocolate dropped on my pants. It's not the first time I've ever gotten chocolate on my clothing, but it is the first time it ever permanently stained. I noticed it as soon as I got home, and no amount of stain remover has worked. Wonder what's in that waxy stuff?
