  • After attending the SMoCA event, the artists and visitors headed here for some post-event drinks. I guess we had reserved one part of the patio area - which was cool by me. I thought the patio was done really well - sleek and modern without looking tacky and trying too hard - never mind the massive egg in one spot. Pretty much a black & white motif. An array of seating choices - cabanas, benches, wicker chairs, big square ottoman thing, etc. Fully stocked bar, and the outdoor fireplace was totally raging with a dozen votive candles. I mean, even though it's 86 degrees at 9 at night, ambiance is still everything. Servers constantly came around with pizzas - all different, all decent. Nice touch. Now, the scene. When an establishment goes out of its way to be all about image, what kind of crowd do you think it's going to attract? Yep, straight outta the Night of the Living Mannequins. First, the drink servers. Biffy, Taffy, Muffy, and the one who wasn't so sure of herself, Iffy. Dressed in, well, various stages of undress. One was in a bikini - I kid you not. Our server Taffy had this thin long jacket over her bra top. All women very Sunset Strip-looking "It" girls, which still to me looks completely out of place in Arizona, but I guess if that's what half of Scottsdale aspires to be like, then so be it. Taffy was nice & quick with the orders, though, so I won't dock her a star. Maybe she's just forward thinking - who needs to wear clothes at night when it's 86 degrees? However, my tanqueray tonic was a little on the weak side, which didn't set too well with me knowing how much they were probably going to charge for it, but I'll blame the bartender and leave poor Taffy alone. As for the other patrons around the rest of the bar - guys in chinos, Rolexes, and sports jackets and the Barbies trying to land one of them. Choice crowd, I'd say. I then walked into the hotel (Mondrian) and checked out the Red Bar (ie. "Be seen here and get your pic taken for the Clubs & Nightlife section of AZ Central, because dude, you're so money!") but I'd say Skybar's definitely the nicer one of the two. Anyway, I guess I'd give Skybar 3 stars. I don't know. To be fair, we had a large chunk of the patio to ourselves and they were very acommodating to us, and the place itself is pretty damn sleek. I just don't think I'd ever go out of my way to come here on my own volition, because talking about the Ferrari I don't have to Tiffany who's probably wondering to herself if I look like one of the kids' gardeners on Laguna Beach would get old after 3 minutes. But hey, experiences like this one is all about expanding one's horizons, right? Right? (crickets)
