| - all right, i s'pose this is on the list of must-see toronto sites but i was unfortunately underwhelmed. since we bought the city pass it was worth it go to here but geez regular prices are expensive and no discounts to be seen anywhere! instead of paying for the pricey $3 per half hour (!) parking nearby we found some metered parking a few blocks away (later spotted some $5 flat rate lots just north of the tower!). CN tower is immersed within many of the business towers downtown so it was interesting to be surrounded by businesspeople going about their routines as we're dressed in tourist garb and toting our cameras. :)
the CN tower visit itself is pretty quick - probably a little over an hour if you take your time. there's an elevator that takes you to the viewing area and it only has glass closest to the door and a few small windows in the ground (so try to grab a spot towards the front left or right or enter right before the doors close!). when we got up there the initial viewing area is best for pictures with the restaurant (prices aren't that bad - price fixe $32 with a burger for $17) taking up about half of the area overlooking the water and an overly pricey cafe occupying about a quarter of the space.
downstairs you can go outside but there are wires making pictures not as snazzy. and i was excited to take pictures with the glass floor but it's only a small area, there are way too many support beams in the way, the view from down below is boring (it overlooks grass and a few park benches - not exciting traffic or anything), and it's virtually impossible to take a photo that looks like you're falling (which is what we, and everyone else, was trying to do). they do offer professional photos with the camera mounted about 10 feet above and while the pictures come out better you can still see the support beams and it's not that exciting.
our city pass also included the himalamazon ride - a 4D ride with a story line i didn't understand at all. i was confused as to who the audience was for the story - would little kids understand genetic modification of trees?, would adults be tricked into believing all of the scientific inaccuracies, and why the heck am i a LOG?? you basically enter a star tours style 16ish person vehicle, fasten your seat belt, and watch on a screen as if you're a log going on a roller coaster ride to your doom. you're splashed with water more times than i thought was necessary and they flick your legs with hair during times i didn't really understand. would probably be better with 3D glasses on. maybe i'm spoiled by having been to the disney theme parks but i wasn't very amused.
probably a place that you "should" go to as a tourist but i think it's a little overrated and expensive for a few photos of the skyline, would probably recommend making reservations for lunch at the restaurant, grabbing a few $17 burgers, and savoring the view for less money.
