  • Mmmmm! I LOVE Chinese bakeries and always have to fight my urges whenever there is one nearby~ I had a few minutes to kill this morning and spotted this place across the way so I stopped in to grab a few buns. I don't know how I never went in before as I'm no stranger to this plaza! I went in expecting to find the standard BBQ pork, egg tarts (which I don't eat), curry beef buns, etc. but I saw a few that I'd never seen or tried before! I only meant to get *a few* but ended up walking out with over a dozen. The first thing I smelled when I walked in there was garlic, so naturally, I went in search of the source and saw that they have garlic bread! OK, nothing extraordinary but I don't think I've seen that before at Chinese bakeries (maybe I don't get out enough?) so of course I had to get one--there's nothing like fresh garlic bread ($1 each)!! I also got some BBQ ($1.20), Swiss chestnut *WOW!* ($1.40), and for the kids: ham & cheese ($1.20), chicken hot dog ($1.20), and a couple of others. They were all really fresh, fluffy, and delicious! (By 'all' I don't mean that I had them all to myself!) My absolute favourite was the Swiss chestnut and of course, it was the more expensive one of the BUNch (did I really just do that..)! I truly regret not getting more of them! The bread part was typical Chinese bakery fare, but the inside was crazy-delicious!! I've only ever had chestnut bread in Korea and I LOVE IT. Had I known there's a Chinese bakery in town that has it, I would have gone to Lucullus sooner! I've also eaten marron in Switzerland but can't vouch for the ones in the buns being Swiss, but they are nevertheless really good. The chestnut is in a crumbly paste form, not chunks or pieces. My favourite thing about Asian baked goods is that their stuff is never too sweet and the buns were just right. There were tons of other bun options, as well as loaves, cakes (individual and larger) and a big cooler full of drinks containing jellies and such at the bottom but I didn't want to go too hog-wild since the buns were only meant to curb a snack-y craving. When I was waiting to pay, it took a while and I wondered how long it takes to bag a bunch of buns but they actually seal each one in an individual bag! That's great and all but I hate that so many plastic bags get used up like that! While all that was going on, I did see on their price list/menu board above that they have a deal for $4.19 where you can get a rice dish and a drink--not bad! It's the buns that set you back a bit--they're priced quite a bit higher than at other bakeries which is OK for the stuff that no one else carries or if they have items that are *the best* in town but apart from the chestnuts buns, they're just another Chinese bakery, but with higher prices!
