| - Pretty standard gastropub fare - large beer selection, decent food, busy staff who just want to turn your table.
We arrived around 915p on a Tuesday and was told by a snarling hostess that it was 30 minutes. Not the best start to the evening...but I thought the SMS system was cool - leave a number and they text you when the table is ready.
Got myself a Strongbow cider to go with the bread and pretzel. Came with butter and some odd cheese sauce that didn't really do any justice to the pretzels. Still, the caraway seed bread was tasty.
We started with crab salad with pickled radish and corn soup to share. Crab salad was very good, lots of crab meat - though I wouldn't say the little bits of crab bones/shells were any good for the texture. Suppose it's hard to get everything when there's that much crab meat. Corn soup was kind of plain, even with the minced crab in it, and didn't have enough corn kernels to call it corn soup - unless it was puréed...then I just didn't taste it.
Wife had mussels and clams. Was an enormous pile of them. She was salivating when I was taking photos, but a few bites in she thought the broth brought out too much of the fishy taste in the shellfish. Most chefs would use some butter, sake, or wine to cut the fish taste a bit - not here. Needless to say, she didn't finish the dish.
I ordered the shepards pie. After watching GR enough on tv, I'd figure I'd try his signature dish out and see what the hype was all about. One of his biggest peeves about the pies he tries is the amount of grease in the dish. Well, his kitchen staff must have missed those episodes, because my pie was chalk full of grease. The meats in the stew itself was nice and tender, albeit a bit bland; but with the mashed potatos soaking up all the grease, the dish got to be really heavy. Texture wise though, the dish wins 5 stars - creamy mashed, chewy meats, and crunchy vegetables makes for a texture dream.
Waiter asked how things were at the end and we started into some of the things above; but as he was tuning us out the moment his question was finished, we didn't bother to go into much detail. We had hopes of bringing a visiting friend next week, but in the end, we decided on two things -- not to get a dessert as to prolong the staffs evening, and not returning for another visit.
Good night.
