| - You come to this place for the "Crunch Burger!" I just wanted to start off with that, so that no one missed it. The Liberty serves an incredible burger, with a good draft beer selection, good service, and a great pub atmosphere. The only downfall to this place is it is a little pricey (as many gastropubs are in Charlotte). If the burgers were a little more reasonably priced, this place would be worthy of five stars.
For those who have trouble finding this place, it is in the same parking lot as Tupelo Honey. It's literally right across the lot. For some reason, I had driven up and down South Boulevard dozens of times without noticing it.
The atmosphere is nice and is fairly typical for a more upscale gastropub. It is somewhat dark and dimly lit giving it kind of an old tavern feel. The wood is dark, exposed and simple. The columns in the main dining area are made of empty kegs, which I thought was kind of a cool touch. They also had live acoustic music in the bar area on the Thursday night that I went.
The Draft beer selection here is very good. They have some selections that you would have trouble finding at other gastropubs. I ordered a Lukcy Basartd by Stone, which is a seasonal by them. I only paid $6, which is not a bad price for a high gravity with upwards of 8% ABV. They also have some hard to find options such as the Enjoy By, but you're probably better off having this at home; it is rather expensive here. It's also worth noting that they were out of several options that they had listed on the menu, but our waitress handled it like a champ and even gave us a free beer. Points for that.
Now to the food. I literally don't see any reason why you should come here and not get the Crunch Burger. It was seriously incredible. Top of the pops of the gourmet burger. We had 6 people at our table and we all ordered the burger, and literally no on walked away disappointed. That's impressive. You can tell that the burger is made with high quality beef. It is so tender and juicy. The Crunch Burger is topped with pimento cheese, jalapeño bacon, onions, and hand cut chips. Check, check, and check. The pimento cheese had a nice moderate spice to it and was extra creamy. The jalapeño bacon added some more spice and along with the chips gave it a nice crunch. This burger is exceptional.
Along with the burger we got the hand cut fries which were exceptional as well. I would definitely ask for their house ranch to dip the fries in. It is a mixture between buttermilk ranch and bleu cheese. Very good with the fries. We also got the poutine as an appetizer for the table. I'm not a huge fan of poutine and had never been that impressed, but this was probably the best I've had.
The Liberty has great food and it is definitely worth a trip just to check out the Crunch Burger. The only downfall is the price. The Crunch Burger is $15 at dinner. If you want to save a couple of bucks, you can go and get the same burger at lunch for $12.50. Either way, it is worth a try. Just fair warning: It's not a cheap place.
