This might be weird, but I live in Toronto and I have actually stayed at the Global Village for a night. A friend and I thought it would be fun to pretend to be from somewhere exotic (we picked Australia) and off we went.
I don't really remember much because we went to the hostel bar and got absolutely stupid drunk - and for cheap! The drinks here are obviously very inexpensive so as to lure travelers to stay and get wasted without emptying their wallets.
But the unique clientele is why you'll want to come here - even if you're from Toronto. You might not think so, but lots of people backpack through
Canada. They're from all over - Asia, Africa, South America, Europe and Australia! We met some great folks from Aussieland (we told them we were from Toronto) and had tons of fun with them.
The bar itself is pool tables and shoddy furniture but the patio is beautiful and always filled with crazy characters. Although I don't really remember them, the rooms seemed like pretty standard hostel accommodations - small, gross and communal. There's lots of fun to be had at this place and I recommend you check it out - whether you're from near or far.
