West Side market is one of my all time favorite places to shop for groceries. It has that European market feel to it. I won't get to carried away here though, it doesn't have all the exotics you can find are a European market or deli but they do have prime A and hard to find cuts of meats ( beef pork lamb chicken quail pheasant etc) from several local farms and if they run out they can get it to you in a couple of days. Best is you can go whole or half hog to a piglet if you like but need to call ahead with any of the vendors but it's easy to do. go the west side website and look up the vendors.
We have tried and sampled each of the bakeries and pastries vendors offerings, can not go wrong with any of them. One note of caution is shop early, every time we went after 12pm the bread was picked clean, especially around the holidays. Although there is some slim pickings the Baker sells the rest at a discount and once they sell out they close up and leave.
On the fish section I'm not impressed. They have some hard to find items like grouper and Black fish. The problem is I have been to Whollys in Pittsburgh so many times that I've been brain washed to know what good looks like...hint hint, get over to Whollys for fish if you haven't been there...
Overall your getting quality product at a good value and in most cases supporting local farmers. oh, and there is a large produce section that you can get good deals but nothing you can't get at the super market... some times the sellers hawking is annoying.
