What I love about this place - so many dessert options. I was amused that they had snowballs, elephant ears and apple dumplings. All for really good prices! Well, really good prices compared to what I'm used to paying in Virginia.
Almond cupcake - The best cake with nuts I've had (I grew up with Chinese bakery cakes with almonds). The almonds are candied! I didn't think I'd like the Boston cream inside but it wasn't heavy or over powering at all. The frosting on it was so light and not super sweet. The cake was light and fluffy. I wish I had gotten the mini cake (dolce) version. By the way, the dolce size is a really reasonable price considering I've paid the same price for stingy small slices of cake.
Oakmonter mini cake (dolce) - took me a while to figure out that dolce was a size option. I had to try this cake since it was named the Oakmonter so it had to be special. The cheesecake was perfect. It wasn't too rich and paired so well with the rest of the cake. The fudge wasn't too sweet. The dark chocolate cake was so moist and satisfying. The frosting wasn't super sweet and just perfect. I sorta wanted more frosting.
Chocolate filled long John - good and SO much filling inside. Might I even say almost too much? It was a huge size. If you're wanting to try a variety of goods, skip this as it's huge, it will take up more tummy space, and it doesn't keep as fresh as say the cakes/cookies.
Chocolate petite four - these are huge! And moist. Good rich, deep chocolate flavor without it being super sweet. Get this if you're in the mood for chocolate. I got this instead of the double trouble cupcake. Considering I liked all the cakes I've tried here, I don't think any either could disappoint.
Chocolate chip cookie - My man said this was the best ever. I took a bite out of curiosity and it was the softest chocolate chip cookie. Not the chewy type. It almost tasted like a soft sugar cookie with chocolate chips to me but I'm not big on cookies.
PB&J donut - good but I've had better.
Caramel thumbprint cookie - so buttery and light. The caramel part was sub par and almost tasted like maple to me.
Cake donut holes - these were huge.
Fritter with chocolate frosting - this was probably my least favorite. I don't think I tasted any chunks of apple. Maybe their fritters don't have chunks of apple but I assumed most fritters did. It didn't need the frosting on it and I don't think it paired well with the donut. The frosting isn't the same as the milk chocolate frosting on their Oakmonter. It's sweeter and not as light. The donut itself was decent.
My man and I had a long drive home (almost 4 hours) back to Virginia. All of the baked goods (including his peanut butter fudge whole cake) did not melt! It was low 80's in VA that day. Well, the only thing that melted a tad was the chocolate petite four but it was mostly still whole.
We arrived at noon on a Monday first for lunch though. I had the spring salad with raspberry vinaigrette and added chicken. The nuts in it were candied perfectly and the vinaigrette was flavorful (only needed to use half the container). He had a turkey sandwich (jacked up turkey) and loved it. I was a bit jealous because the baguette looked perfectly toasted. I had a bite and the turkey was moist. I had a bite of the pizza roll with marina dipping sauce and that was good too. The size of our sandwich and salad were just perfect (so we can fit in lots more dessert after).
The cake products still tasted fresh the next day. If I were to visit, I'd focus on the cake selections as there's plenty of good (better) donut options in VA.
