| - Came in last Thursday, sometime before 7 pm, and there was a mother with three children seated and waiting in the lobby before me. I signed in (and wrote down the time), handed the receptionist my medical card, and grabbed a nose and mouth mask from the tray with a sign that asked all flu and possible measles carriers to wear them. It took 15 minutes from the time I signed in to the time a nurse admitted me to one of the rooms in the back. No vitals were taken, except for my temperature (wand under the tongue), and I was asked to do this myself, as the nurse didn't want to be contaminated, since she "sees a lot of patients." I was running a 102.4 F fever... She asked me what were my major complaints as far as symptoms were concerned, so I told her cough and congestion, muscle and joint aches, and fever. Her internet connection apparently broke down, so she decided to just go and get the doctor. I laid down to wait for the doctor, about five minutes, or so.
A masked doctor came in and waited for me to sit back up. Approached me and said "Congested? Muscle aches? Running a fever? Work at _______? You have the flu." I said "Yes, I know." He said he'd write prescriptions for Tamiflu (one pill, twice a day, for five days) and a Z-pack (five days) and asked me if I knew what Z-packs were (yes) and had any trouble taking it (no). I asked him if Tamiflu*** contained cornstarch, could he could ask the pharmacist to substitute something that didn't contain cornstarch, he said he didn't know. (I asked him this, because another doctor of mine had prescribed Vitamin D gels for me to take that specifically didn't have corn fillers in them for me a long time ago, so I thought this doctor might do the same.)
There are Urgent Care clinics closer to where I live, but this specific one shares the same database as Scottsdale Healthcare (hence the name), which is why the medical clinic sent me here. My sister in NC was surprised when the UC doc gave me an antiviral and antibiotic at the same time, and I told her it's standard whenever i get sick, due to my symptoms, medical history, and where I work.
First time here and it went well. My copay was $25.
***Tamiflu is made with corn maltodextrin, which is pretty standard in pills gel tabs, and Walgreens pharmacist didn't know of any substitutions, nor the info. I had to look up the ingredients online. The Z pack can irritate stomachs and thus your intestines, so make sure you eat something first, preferably oatmeal or something hearty.
I started feeling better enough to eat something heartier than spoonfuls of soup broth on day three. Prepare to sweat a lot (I lost four pounds in water weight and muscle apathy), and I was glad to have our water cooler and all of the coconut water I bought from Costco (I had Vita Coco and Zico) for water and electrolyte rehydration! Please take care of yourselves and your loved ones!!
