  • My son is in 11th grade at Nevada State High School based in Henderson. He is halfway through his first semester and we are both really pleased so far. Yes, there is a lot of paperwork to fill out, forms to submit, and details to follow closely to ensure compliance with high school and college rules, but for basically 2 years of free college tuition, it's worth it! Getting kids to start college early, if they are ready, is way smarter than trying to earn college credit through AP classes/exams, which many colleges will not accept for credit (why would they when they can charge you to to take classes at their institutions?) We chose this program over CSN HS because NV State provides more college classes than the CSN program (at 5 different local/online colleges, including CSN), and because the schedule at NSHS is more flexible to work around things like jobs, sports, music, (you can still do these at your zoned school), etc. The usual course plan is to take 3 college classes first semester, 4 second semester, and 5 each semester during senior year (all paid for by NSHS). However, it's possible to add (and pay for yourself) the 3 additional classes, during summer school or winter break sessions, which would be required to earn an associates degree. Financially speaking, that's about $900 out of your pocket for an associates degree, plus textbook expenses. You can even easily research the professors on sites like ratemyprofessor.com, in order to help you choose the best teachers for classes. I'm a big proponent of educational choice, and this concept really is a great one for many students; too many of our young people are graduating from college with thousands of dollars of debt that cannot be paid off quickly or easily. I'm planning to send my younger children here, too.
