  • I have to admit, seeing the disparaging remarks about the community I reside in was disheartening. I have resided in First Ward Place since June 2009 and have had very minimal issues. I agree with Johnny W. that this is a great community full of individuals who care about making it better. It is true that "one bad apple spoils the bunch". In a lot of these reviews, I truly believe it is a case by case scenario. I moved here from the South Charlotte/Ballantyne area and have experienced some of the same issues here that I did there. I moved into First Ward completing my Ph.D and wanting a nice apartment home near uptown to raise my children. The most "disturbances" I have had have been during Speed Street, CIAA and other such festivities when people can get a little more lively then usual. In those instances, the police have been very prompt with responding and security is always visible. I have NEVER felt "in fear for my life" or unsafe in any way as some have so colorfully described...be mindful, the police department is LITERALLY 2 blocks away. There have been some petty thefts but nothing not par for the course when living in an apartment complex this size. The maintenance staff truly are very friendly, and the leasing office have had some turnover in staff but they are easy enough to work with. I keep the line of communication open with them and have had no problem getting any and all repair issues I have had addressed rather quickly. If they did not get it done right away, it is because they were waiting on a part or needed a specialist to assist. I agree as well that they are overworked and very overwhelmed with managing a mixed-income development but they all do their best. It is my thought that everyone should be able to live well, so I do not care what others do or do not pay for rental of the apartment home. It is my philosophy to "always bloom where you are planted" so therefor I take continued efforts to make this area better very seriously. First Ward is indeed a very diverse (ethnically and socio-economically) community that has no more crime that any other apartment community, could use a few upgrades and could indeed be a bit quieter but guess what, you can't have it all. All in all I love it here, my lease renews in June of this year and if they will have me, I intend to stay. I implore you to join us, come and get active. We have some amazing folks who live here who are waiting to meet you. Let us know you are here so we can officially welcome you. Until then, Happy Apt. Hunting! .
