| - BACKGROUND
The original Abe was a character and a great cobbler.
He was a guy that came from "The Old Country" wherever that may be. He was from a long line of cobblers, and was disappointed that his children weren't following in his footsteps, although very proud that he was able to provide a better life for his family than he had.
Abe only needed his workbench and tools.
He remembered everyone and didn't really have a "system" to keep track of orders, other than his memory. The place looked crazy, but if you knew Abe, it all made sense and his devotion to excellent work spoke for itself.
SERVICE EXPERIENCE
I recently went in and the place looks basically the same, except Abe is gone. He died in 2008. The current owners have been there years. It didn't feel like the same shop. Whatever, I paid (yes, you pay upfront) and left my shoes.
When I got them back, I was satisfied. The price was too high. The service was ok. The location is close to my house.
CONCLUSION
I used to look for reasons to stop by Abe's.
Now, I replace shoes instead of repairing them.
Which is for the best, since Abe is gone.
