  • Let me be the first to warn you all...this place was a hot mess from beginning to end. We pulled in late in the evening looking for an Econo Lodge, we pulled up to a broken sign with a temporary crooked banner showing Quality Inn on it. Fine, perhaps they were in the process of rebranding the Econo Lodge, while it was a terrible face for the hotel, perhaps East Cleveland had been hit by some rough wind recently. However, upon entering the establishment, it was clearly a general theme of being between redecorating the place and an overall air of "We don't care" by hotel management. We check in and the front desk man couldn't quite figure out how to ring us up, so he had to call for advice. No idea if he was new or hasn't done this job before, but no explanation was given. We received our key and had to ask what our room number was. Perhaps he was used to dealing with psychics and mind readers? We then turn one direction to see that our room number was not on the placard, we turn the other direction and once again notice that our room number is not on the placard...this leads us back to the front desk man. He informs us that we need to go down one of the halls, go down the stairs and we'll see it. I thought this was curious given our room was on the first floor, but thought, hmmm, why not, I like an adventure. Two separate stairwells (one up and one down) and multiple turns later, we arrive at our room. The electronic reader has much difficulty reading our card, but I chalked this up to it being late and perhaps we were not operating on all cylinders. Now keep in mind, the walk to our room included the treasure hunt to find it, the smells of cigarette smoke down one hall (presumably the smoking rooms) and the smells of marijuana down another hall (unclear if these were smoking rooms), and the lovely sights of new and old carpet either not yet installed or recently removed as well as a fine dust covering everything which could either be from the carpet removal or possible repainting. We finally enter our room. It's a bit spartan, but hey, it's an econo Lodge, not the Ritz. My husband goes to shut the door latch (that U shaped metal piece that goes over the knob attached to the door) and the knob isn't there. Well that's not ideal as I have very little faith that the front desk wouldn't actually double book our room and give some random stranger access, but we weren't going to be here long, so we figured we could put something in front of it if need be (clearly we weren't the first to think of this as there were scratch marks on the floor in front of the mini fridge and dresser). We had our dog with us and had been on the road several hours so my husband was going to take advantage of the convenient sliding door in our room that lead to the outside of the hotel to walk our well behaved puppy, only to discover 4 squad cars for the local law enforcement in the process of a drug bust. Once again, we think, well that's not ideal, but my husband decides he'll wait it out and shower before taking the dog out. The bathroom had clearly not been cleaned after the remodel efforts within the room as there was a layer of dust over everything and paint residue over the bathroom surfaces. The shower curtain had somehow escaped the remodel activity and was sporting a lovely brown tinge that was likely the result of either rust or hard water coupled with general neglect by the hotel housekeeping crew. His shower over, he comes out to inform me that the hot water works great! But the cold water does not and thus he was unable to actually stand under the stream without suffering scalding. Nevertheless he decided to dress and take the dog for a walk, only to discover that the incident had not wound down, but there was the introduction of a new squad car. This was when we decided our stay in East Cleveland should probably come to an end. While I took baggage and puppy out to our car, my husband informed the front desk man why we were leaving and he was met with a nod of understanding from the man, but no offer to reconcile the issue. Upon calling Econo Lodges customer service, a difficult task to find the number to begin with, we sit on hold for about 10 minutes for the woman to not act surprised at all and then transfer us to a non-operational number because it was after hours. Upon calling back and waiting on hold again, the new woman, also not surprised, informed us we would have to wait until the next day to file a complaint and try to get a refund, but if we wanted her to, she could help make a new reservation, she'd just need our credit card number to book the room to. No Thanks, we're all set! This would be a zero if we could, but we can't, so they get a grudging one star.
