  • My children went to this school for almost two years. I did not realize how dysfunctional this school was until my children started going somewhere else. My eyes are now open to some of the unacceptable practices that take place here that are damaging children's developing self esteem and self image. For parents who send your children to this school, please ask your children probing questions about how they are talked to and what they are allowed to do. Sadly, I did not ask enough questions. My pre-school age child was repeatedly told by one teacher (who is related to the director of the school) that he was bad and was not allowed to play with the "good" kids. I talked to the school administration about it, things changed for about a week, but then back to the same thing. Being a concerned parent, and trying to determine if my child was really that bad, I contacted multiple other teachers at the school and all told me that my son was no more of a handful than the other kids and the real problem was the "untouchable" attitude of the assistant teacher. About a month after I complained about the assistant teacher, I was called by the school director and told my son was no longer allowed to attend because of his bad behavior. When I asked who was consulted in this decision I was told the assistant teacher (who I had complained about) and the owner. Not my son's actual teacher, who had just told me earlier in the week that he was bright, sweet, and had a lot of potential. Furthermore, I found out from my son after he stopped attending the school that the same assistant teacher told him he needed obedience training (like a dog) and that he would always be bad. These words have really scarred my son and he routinely brings them up when I tell him he is a good boy. He says, "no, I am not. Mr XX says I will always be a bad boy." Simply sad. I should have been looking out for red flags. Sadly, I assumed that since this was a Christian school and some of the people were very nice that it must be a good place. They have a high turnover rate for teachers and most teachers have been there less than a year. There was even a former teacher picketing outside the school one day. When I would go to the school and always see children running amuck, I thought it was normal (I had nothing to compare it to). The "curriculum" involves a lot of free play and recess time. When it comes to outside time, the inmates appear to be running the asylum. There is no structure or thorough supervision while outside. The teachers seem to be spread very thin and are constantly bouncing between rooms. At the end of the day I would ask the adult in charge how my kids were that day and most times the answer was, "I don't know. I just got put in this room." The cameras that are touted as a safety feature do not work during nap time and routinely there is only one teacher left with the 20+ kids in the dark. I recognize my children are not angels and sometimes make poor choices. But I believe all children deserve respect and support and not everyone is given that at Henderson Christian Academy.
