  • I would love to evaluate our balloon ride experience, but I can only comment on a balloon ride that did not happen for our family's Christmas "treat". Many weeks in advance, we bought 4 Groupons and scheduled our Hot Air Expedition tour for the Friday morning before Christmas. At 7am on the morning of the ride as we were all driving to the airport for the 7:30am check in we got a phone call telling us the ride was canceled due to high winds. We were disappointed - but we completely understood that safety is paramount. The caller told us that she would reschedule our ride for the afternoon of the Monday after Christmas. I immediately rearranged our family's plans for that Monday and even canceled an event we had booked so we could do the balloon ride. However, a few hours after our early morning call, Margie (owner of the company) called to say we could not take the ride on the Monday since that was a blackout day for groupons. I explained to her that Monday afternoon was the only possible time as our sons were flying home on Tuesday and that I had completely rearranged our Monday around the balloon ride. She said she would see what she could do and get back to me later that day. No call. I called back on Saturday morning to find out what our status was and she told me she was still "trying" to get us onto a ride for the Monday afternoon. I have no doubt that by this time our spots had been resold to full-fare passengers, and that Margie was just stringing me along and had no intention of putting us on the Monday afternoon flight. Despite her promise to get back to me with an update Monday morning I never heard another word from her or HAE, so my only memory is of cancelled plans and fruitless attempts to get some information from the company. No one is to blame for the weather related balloon ride cancellation - my issue is that HAE's subsequent handling of the situation was appalling. Clearly customer relations and communication skills are not anything that Margie at Hot Air Expeditions cares about or understands. I called Groupon, explained the situation, and they refunded our money. Kudos to Groupon, but no thanks to Hot Air Expeditions.
