| - My old gym was the LA Fitness over on Dobson & Warner in Chandler, which I found to be dated and depressing. I made the move to this one in Gilbert because it appeared to be newly built, and I wanted a change. I am totally happy now, because the equipment here is all new, and the crowd that works out in the evening is a good mix. I'm thrilled that the treadmills here have integrated television screens with closed captioning, since I refuse to wear my glasses while working out. One thing that bothers me greatly is that the treadmills will implement a Cool Down phase after 20 minutes, which takes the frantic pressing of buttons to try to defeat. Be forewarned that the speed will slow once you hit that 20-minute mark... it's a bit off-putting if you're not paying attention.
I understand the reason for the 20-minute "warning", since this is the recommended maximum time if other people are waiting for the treadmills, but so far, there have always been treadmills available for everyone who wanted one. The swell of after-work gymgoers is a little thick during the weekdays, but for the most part, this gym can get crowded but has never been "packed to the gills" in my experience.
So I'm mostly pleased to make this my regular gym. I feel the $29 a month is worth it. My only other complaint is that the water fountains don't seem to dispense very cold water, but my workaround is to pack a prechilled canteen or two of water to get me through my workout. My experience is that there is a good mix of body types, fitness levels, and ages that frequent this gym. It's pretty convenient to get to since it is right off of the 202 loop, and gas and cold sports drinks are mere blocks away at a Circle K, should you need some for the drive home.
