  • On this unfortunate Saturday, my family and I decided to go to the Japanese Garden hoping to take pictures with my baby cousin because she was going to be leaving to California soon. My sister and I went dressed in a traditional Vietnamese dress. So as we were in the front waiting to pay for our tickets, the staff members told us that photo shoots were not allowed and we explained that we weren't having a photo shoot but just taking random silly pictures on my cousins new Nikon. They then told us they had a strict policy so they couldn't allow us to take pictures in "fancy" clothing because of their rules. We asked them if we changed, would it be okay and they said yes. I changed into a casual white shirt and jeans and my sister changed into a pair of tights and wore a Christmas sweater because that's what we had at the moment. As my cousin and I went out own way to take a picture of grass, I sat on the bench and my cousin took pictures of me because it was a good view. It was the spot where there was a fence so you can see the park from the garden, not the garden itself. But then this Asian lady with a red flannel came over and yelled at us. She said, "you cannot take a photo! You have to go to the gift shop and pay $150! Or you have to quit." My cousin then apologized and said that it wasn't a photo shoot. The staff replied with so much sass and disrespect. We told her the staff in the front said we could take pictures but in casual clothing and we even changed for them. So she argued with us a little more and then we said that we would stop and apologized while she constantly treated us like CRAP. We walked over to the rest of the family, as the lady continued to follow us and kept watching us as OTHERS were taking PICTURES of themselves WITH A DSLR NIKON like we were but she didn't say anything. Disappointed, my family wanted our money back and this staff walked over to us and told us we can get a refund. We went to the front and met that SAME lady and she told us that we CANNOT DO REFUNDS. Apparently we were in there for more than 15 minutes when it was actually 8 minutes. Arguing back and forth with my family, she said we were taking photo shoots but we were not and she made super rude hand gestures and spit in our faces as she was yelling. My cousin constantly told her she would delete the pictures, and she did, but the disrespectful lady would not watch her nor acknowledge her efforts in deleting the pictures. Apparently taking ANY pictures weren't allowed in there without paying $150, so we got our money back but were short by $2 but we figured that we didn't want to come back because the lady was unbelievable rude and said she would call the police. My family and I didn't do anything wrong for her to bring the authorities into this. We just took pictures of the scenery on our phones and some selfies while my cousin only took pictures of the grass with her Nikon D90. We were EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED with this place and staff. They were so much nicer a year ago and now they charge for pictures. Even though my family was not the only one taking pictures, we were the only ones yelled at. I'm not a person who usually complains when there's bad service, but I can't even take a picture of grass here without paying $150.
