| - I wanted to trade my Chrysler in for a Jeep so that I did not have to deal with selling it on Craigslist or Autotrader. Haggling with potential buyers who need to test drive my car before making me a crummy offer was not how I wanted to spend my weekends. But trading it in to a dealer as down payment for a new car often results in the dealer making you a crummy offer as well. So I looked up the blue book value of my Chrysler and stopped in at Sahara Chrysler Jeep because it was close to where I was dining that day. I figured I would go to a few Jeep dealerships in town while shopping to see which one was more appealing. I mean if you want coffee at Starbucks, each coffee shop sells their product for the same price, right? That's not how it works when you buy a new car as the exact model will vary in price from one dealer to another.
Turns out I did not need to go to any other Jeep dealer because Sahara does not have those insane markups or hidden costs. It's not like the traditional dealership where the car you want is not quite available but it is if you don't mind paying more for add-ons that you don't really need. Plus that appealing price on the advertised loss leader is usually not available but 'we'll sell you a similar one for a few thousand dollars more' which is equivalent to spending a few thousand dollars of extras that you don't want. Sahara is not like that. Their sales people are not high pressure types (at least the one I had wasn't) and they don't play the 'good cop, bad cop' routine with the floor manager and salesman battering the customer. Their prices are pretty much fixed and listed so that you're not being upsold in order for someone to enjoy a large commission at your expense. It's kind of refreshing not having to haggle, bargain, and compromise as you attempt to make a purchase.
My salesperson, Jacob, couldn't have been more relaxed and never pressured me, never swamped me with endless emails and phone calls. I got the feeling that if I did not buy the Jeep from him, he would have still left me with a handshake, a smile, and wished me luck. Others make you feel like you're taking food from their baby's plate by not buying from them. Dave, the sales manager, was equally calm and laid back. There were a couple of details that needed to be ironed out to my satisfaction before I'd even consider buying from Sahara and Dave made it happen so that both sides could be happy with the end result. Noah in the finance department was also very pleasant and answered all my questions skillfully. I kept wondering when I was going to run into an unprofessional jerk during the entire process but it never happened. Their sales methods are how things should be - post the price without an insane markup and that's that. It's like going to Target or Whole Foods and paying the price that's on the price tag.....what a concept.
So I ended up getting a fair trade-in on my Chrysler and left with the Jeep that I wanted but did not have to overpay for it. In many ways, this car buying process turned out to be a pleasant one instead of the often stressful one. I highly recommend Sahara Chrysler Jeep (Dodge too, I think). Even if you plan to visit multiple dealerships, at least put these folks in your rotation for comparison's sake. Hopefully you'll be as impressed as I was.
