| - This is my new favorite place for ramen, and it's unfortunate that Monta is located so far away. Or is it? I say it's just another good reason to visit Vegas... again. I'm not a ramen expert, but I've had my fair share of ramen throughout LA and OC (though Daikokuya in LA is up there). Everyone has their own style of ramen, coming from different regions in Japan. My favorite just happens to be tonkatsu-style ramen.
After waiting about a half hour to get seated in this hole-in-the-wall, we were slurping away. The price of $6.95 per bowl is a steal, but if you want to add extras it can easily go up to $10+. I had the tonkatsu-shoyu, and I found the broth to be perfect. Deep, rich flavor, while not too heavy or salty.
My particular bowl of ramen came with thin noodles, which were okay. I kept reaching over to steal some of my wife's shoyu bowl, which had the standard, curly-style ramen noodles. Those had a nice, al dente chew, and I just loved how it clinged onto the flavors from the broth. Of course, what did I do after I was finished with my bowl? I had to order an extra side of curly ramen noodles for $1.50. Well worth every penny.
The other part worth mentioning is the slices of pork in the ramen. I'm used to the thick, fatty slices of pork belly. At Monta, the pork is so thinly sliced that it just melts and falls apart as soon as you try to pick it up with chopsticks. It's a shame that you only get 2 slices with the bowl. Next time around, I'm ordering extra.
I can just imagine my face dripping with sweat if I'm slurping down Monta ramen in 110+ Vegas heat in the summer. I was dripping with sweat in 70 degree winter weather in November! At any rate, it's definitely worth the short drive from the Strip, the sweat, and the wait to eat at Monta ramen.
