| - Last day of January's $20 full coverage adoption fee, and I barely heard about the program. Crap! I was in need of a Therapuetic Companion and this would be my chance to bypass military service dog orgs and also save a life. Thank goodness the Super Bowl Celebrity Golf Classic ended by 3, shelter closes at 5, yeah I made 40 miles seem like 20, but I made it!
So I asked what kind of dogs were available, and I was looking for a lab or Husky. Maggie told me about Black Jack... wait, what?! I had to meet this guy!
Black Jack's a beautiful Black Lab Mix, 1.3 years old, and seriously needed a loving home.
I took him out with a volunteer, and this guy was very welcoming and let down his guard. He was so reclusive when people walked up to his kennel, but out of it, he trusted me and was very friendly.
I was also looking for a Husky... this is where I felt like an ahole... One was brought in earlier, but wouldn't be available for 4 days pending testing and possible owner recovery. I wanted this Husky, and submitted my interest. But I found out there'd be a lottery if more than one person was interested. I thought I'd wait instead.
I wanted to kick my own ass denying a beautiful dog a loving home he desperately needed. I called back 3 days later and found out how many people were interested in the Husky, a shit-ton! I asked about Black Jack and found out he was a "Bench Warmer" and would still be $20. In a matter of an hour, Black Jack had a loving home, family, and his life would only get better.
I would recommend getting a history (despite the airhead reviews) of your new friend. These animals have histories, abuse, neglect, and aggression. Prepare your family, in fact, take the family to see how the animal behaves.
Soon Black Jack will be entering Obedience classes, and graduate to Veteran Service Dog training to be my PTSD and TBI Service Dog.
