| - Thank you, yelpers, for helping me find this hotel. It was excellent! The room was small-ish but very attractive. I loved the rich colors they chose for the walls, which went well with the dark wood of the furniture. Very nice carpet too. There was a nice flat screen TV, though I didn't really use it while I was there. Too much else to do on Fremont street! The room was also very clean, and I never had any problems with water pressure or getting enough hot water. (And the shower head was mounted way up by the ceiling... for you tall folks.)
One warning - the beds were a little too soft for me, and I usually like a relatively soft bed. If you need a very firm bed... well, you might try calling to ask if they have firmer beds in some rooms. Another minor complaint - there is no desk or table in the room. There is wireless (for a small fee), but not really anywhere to put your laptop, except on the bed. (I got a room with 2 double beds. Maybe rooms with 1 bed have a table.) Also, it would be great if there was a frig & a microwave, but that seems relatively rare in Vegas...
I was worried about the lack of non-smoking rooms, and the hallways were pretty smoky. However, the ventilation in the room was excellent, and my room didn't smell like smoke at all. The AC was very effective too.
The service was great - everyone was very friendly. Even the maids smiled and greeted me in the hallways. I got a room facing Fremont Street, and I highly recommend that, unless you want to go to sleep before midnight (the last video show), or you are really bothered by noise (it stays somewhat noisy all night out there). But I don't care about either of those things, and for me it was exciting to be close to the action.
I didn't spend a huge amount of time in the casino, but enough time to notice that they're liberal with the free drinks, even if you are parked on the nickel poker machines (as I always am). If you're going to buy alcohol from the bar though, I recommend shopping around in the immediate vicinity because you can definitely find better prices. (However, the Golden Gate bar boasts a nice view of some very attractive go-go dancers in their gaming tables area.) ;-)
I ate at the restaurants a couple times and the food was quite good. The main restaurant serves excellent pancakes (until 11AM), and the bar restaurant delivered a tasty tuna sandwich. I didn't try any other food there, but I'd guess it's all pretty good.
The rate I got was $20/night for weeknights and $40 for Friday and Saturday nights. I felt like I got a tremendous bargain. (If the room had cost more, I'd give it a 4-star rating, but at those rates... I think it deserves the 5 stars!) I'll definitely stay there again next time.
