| - This, like so many other places in Toronto, is on the cusp of a 5 Star delight, but is knocked down a touch for price. So listen up folks, if you can afford it, this is where you ought to be. You'll be cheering from the rooftops (here, a gorgeous and city-best rooftop patio) about your meal.
We went with a group of 7. My GF and I showed up early and grabbed a drink at the bar. A delicious pinto grigio will set you back $17 which seems steep, but they don't serve glasses of wine here; rather carafes. Maybe a glass and a half worth of wine, so at $17 it was actually a fine price for a delicious drink. When our group all arrived we were quickly whisked to a beautiful round table. Floor to ceiling windows let light in from one side while the glow of a bajillion-bottle wine collection illuminated from the other. The noise level was great, with big groups at big tables all suitably spread out so that conversations did not overlap. The decor was great and apart from the fact that the bar looked more like a hotel lobby with a liquor license than an actual bar (it is, to be fair, a hotel lobby after all) it felt like a very swish and yet very warm joint.
A wonderful selection of bread and dips came as we ordered and, courtesy of the house, we received unbelievable Creamy Polenta with Fricasse of Truffled Mushrooms which made my mind melt and my soul sing. For apps I had a great meat dish with cheese and oil, which I am not doing justice. For dinner Laura (the ol' GF there) ordered fois gras and duck ravioli which she immediately declared the best she had ever had (food-wise, I'm sure...) while I had the steak. The steak was well presented as two think slices stood on their ends, so you sliced down the grains as opposed to against them as you would regularly. I forget what else was on my plate to be honest, the steak really was the focal point, but it was overall a great dish and the steak was cooked just right.
We enjoyed a great cheese plate afterwards and settled up the bill to have a nightcap on the roof. Sadly there was some Mario Andretti party going on that night (you win again Andretti) so we couldn't head up, but the staff was very kind and apologetic and even without the beautiful view it was still a great night.
It's not a place to eat much more than once or twice a year (unless you're really rolling in it) but those one or two visits will stay with you for quite some time. Great, exciting, luxurious place that's sure to make the belly big, even if it makes the wallet skinny.
