| - I've been looking for a good bakery in the Madison area for a while and even though Clasen's (I keep wanting to spell it with a "u" so if that slips in during my review I am apologizing right now) is far from perfect it's pretty good.
The first few times we came in I couldn't find any item that I didn't like--the bread is delicious and great for sandwiches, salads, or even to snack on by itself (though a bit overpriced). I've had my share of great sourdough bread from San Francisco, so I'm glad that I can pick up a white, wheat, or several other varieties of sourdough bread at Clasen's. Buns and rolls are good here, too. Cupcakes are great, too. The cake is moist and flavorful. The frosting is NOT the sugary fluff that you get at supermarkets; they're full of cream cheese or butter and rich and delicious. They're much better than the ones at places that specialize in cupcakes (I'm looking at you, Daisy Cupcakery). We also bought the milk chocolate discs, and they were also excellent to snack on. We were planning on melting them and dipping fruit in it for dessert, but they were so creamy that they were fine on their own. I'm also a fan of their danishes--they're sweet and buttery and for $2.50 they are a great breakfast that is big enough to share with someone.
Unfortunately, this past trip we came some major disappointments. The croissants weren't flaky and butter like a good croissant should be; it was just soggy and flavorless. I picked up a few cheese braids, which tasted like cheese and... staleness. Chocolate toffee squares should be sweet and nutty--Clasen's toffee just tasted like bad sugar.
As for service, when we come in during the week we usually run across some very understanding ladies who help us and are patient with our crazy kids. One time my daughter got into a container of chocolate discs (which is the real reason why we ended up buying that item) and one of the ladies took away the 1/4 eaten container and gave us a full one when we offered to pay for it. During the weekend, though, it's run by some rude and complacent teenagers.
I love family-run businesses, and I'll be going to Clasen's again to pick up some bread (when we're too busy to make our bread at home) and other treats. However, watch what you get at Clasen's: if it looks like an item has been sitting untouched, stay away--it is either a dud and/or it's old.
