  • I generally choose 1 of the other crafts stores since I don't tend to do a lot of fabric-related crafts and Joann's is the Toys-R-Us of the crafts stores world (read overpriced). But I'd exhausted local stores (Michaels, Walmart, Home Depot, etc) in my search for a meter stick, so I decided to give them a chance and went there. I even downloaded their app just in case they came through and I wound up having such a positive experience that I started going there more regularly. Nope! In fact, the experience was so far from positive that it'll be a LONG TIME before they get any of my money again. I figured it'd be likely that if they had a meter stick, it'd be in their fabric section, so I went up to 1 of the ladies in the fabric area and politely asked if she could please direct me towards the meter sticks if they had any. She responded by shooting me a dirty look and stating that there was no such thing as meter sticks. I immediately thought of all the professions that are currently using both the measuring systems but I was trying to be friendly so even though she'd been rude I didn't engage back. Then she said that there are yardsticks and that I must have meant that I needed a yardstick and I must have gotten mixed up. I tried to say no and that I needed a meter stick. She said again that I was wrong. Then she asked what would they even be used for and I said that they would be used for measuring millimeters, centimeters, and up to the meter. I said that the rest of the world uses that measuring system. I was going to try to explain that I had bought some things from outside of the US and needed to be able to measure them (I was still trying to have a civilized conversation with the woman- my mistake.) She cut me off with "Well, in the United States, we don't do that." And with that she walked away from me without another word. She was around my mothers age (and my mother certainly knows better than to ever act like this), and I really wish I'd caught her name. So she really has no excuse for her behavior. I know it seems like more and more people are acting like this, but that doesn't make it okay. And if Joanns is okay with their employees acting like this, then they not only don't need my money, but they must be okay with me letting other people know that they hire people like this.
