  • Evelyn was hosting a Yelp event at BMB yesterday evening as part of the "Cheap Pours and Sticky Floors" theme. This place is literally right across the street from the Markham street exit at Bathurst station. This was my first experience going to dedicated karaoke establishment. While I've been to bars that have karaoke nights this is the first place I've been to where this is their main gig. On the main floor they have rooms but they don't serve on that floor. We ended up in the basement where they are allowed to serve and we had a rather large room that ended up being a group of about 20 or so at one point. I'm 6'3" so this basement for me was kind of tight. While there wasn't anywhere I had to really duck and watch my head after getting to the basement the ceiling is sort of low. If you're taller than me you're going to want to get to the couch and have a seat. I could touch my head to the ceiling if I went on my tip toes. The room seemed kind of stuffy but an attendant came in and turned on the AC. You figure with a group of people being in one room that things would heat up a bit. The couch was huge and there were mini coffee tables to put our drinks. Evelyn had ordered bottles of beer and some sake type of drink that I didn't have. The attendant came in with two fat books and this controller that looked like you needed a degree from MIT to use. It seriously looked like some sort of NASA remote to control the Mars lander it was so large. I swear it must have had over 150 buttons on it. Anyway the books were the songs catalogue but it was larger than it seemed. The books were color coded by language. The orange section is the only section that was relevant to me as it was the only section in English. This made up maybe about 1/5 of the book total. The songs list was all in "name of song" order. I had wished there was a reverse index by artist. Sometimes you just know an artist better and you want to see what you can see by the artist. I prefer that method actually. The list didn't have a lot of what I was looking for either and I'm not sure how up to date the list was. I wasn't expecting any top 40 songs from say this summer but there were plenty of songs I was looking for that they didnt' have. So basically you need to find your song, punch in the code on the remote and queue it up to play. The display shows what codes are in queue and what song is next. The system seemed like it needed an update of newer songs if not definitely more songs. I ended up singing: U2 - With or Without You Frank Sinatra - New York, New York Radiohead - Creep When you get some drinks in you and some good songs it's time for some good fun. We had a really good time that night. I had bought some beers which were 5 bucks each. It was nice having a room large enough to have that many people enjoying themselves. The machine itself I didn't actually see it. All I know is there was 2 mics coming out of something and the TV is what we were reading from.
