| - This is the best option to get my biking fix done, and its right here in town! I only have to ride 3 miles to get to the greenbelt, but its worth it. It starts up by the hospital on 90th St and Shea, and goes all the way down to Tempe Town lake. A round trip ride is roughly 40 miles if you like long distance rides as I do. However, its not perfect and here's why: 1) lots of bugs. Being by the water and having lots of grass = lots of bugs. Ride with your mouth closed 2) too many walkers and joggers that have NO CLUE how to use the path properly. The path is dotted like a road, and even has solid lines when you shouldn't pass (ie around blind corners), but NOBODY follows the rules. Prepare to meet walkers, 4 deep, side by side, taking up most of the path, and prepare for people just cutting in front of you w/o looking. Its dangerous when youre on a bike at speed. 3) it floods after a good rain. Prepare to walk your bike around many flooded areas after a rain. 4) the place flat out stinks in many areas due to stagnant water sitting around. 5) lots of undesireables when you get down to El Dorado Park and south. Ive seen bums fighting, guys shooting up heroin, shady characters hanging out, etc. There is a big section of unlit area between the disc golf course and Tempe Town Lake, which is creepy at night. I hate riding through there alone at night and seeing a group of huddled guys off to the side. Will they jump me? Are they dealin drugs? Luckily Ive had no problems, but its still a bit freaky.
Overall the Greenbelt is an awesome place to exercise!
