| - This rating scale is completely inadequate because in all honesty, Bonjour Bakery deserves at least 10 stars. The most fitting analogy I can come up upon my initial discovery of Bonjour Bakery is a bit cliche but no less true. I felt like I had stumbled and tripped over a sack of gleaming, priceless gems that had been hidden in plain sight. This place was my food fantasy come to life!
It all started with a phone call. I had just finished an exhausting work day, and was in desperate, and I mean DESPERATE need of a slice of tiramisu to even fathom the prospect of facing tomorrow. I googled the "tirasmisu + Las Vegas" in my Android phone and nearly cried in despair at the pink dots that clustered primarily on the Strip. It was around 5:35pm and there was no way I was going to risk rush hour traffic on Las Vegas Blvd. I needed a pastry fix NOW, and no fake frozen prepackaged items from Walmart was going to cut it.
So I modified my search to "bakery + Las Vegas" and selected the one nearest me that wasn't already closed. I called to ask them if they carried tiramisu, and a sweet voice replied, "yes we do!" I told her that I would be there very close to 6pm (their closing time) but...pretty please to not close the shop until I arrived. She laughed and assured me she wouldn't. At 5:55pm I screeched to a halt and rushed in. She said they had tiramisu. But she didn't tell me that they carried shelves of heavenly edible art. I think I drooled on the glass display. "Creme brulee, Napoleons, Fruit tart with fresh juicy Strawberries drizzled with just the right amount of glaze, Charlottes, Rum Cake with real rum, etc." And that was just the pastry section! I finally did take the tiramisu and promised to come back and try the myriads of other delectable items.
Oh my god. My good intentions of waiting until I got home to try the tiramisu dissipated the moment I sampled the edge of it while walking out of the store. Thin layer of dark chocolate on the bottom gave just enough substance for my molars to crunch gently with supreme satisfaction, then layered with expresso-infused "melt in your mouth" cake, then a layer of rich custard or creme, then cake, then fresh loose cocoa powder on top...all but gave me an orgasm as I stood on the sidewalk just outside the store. I didn't even make it to my car before I stared at my now empty box. Embarrassment never felt sooo good.
I have since made Bonjour Bakery my holy grail stop at least 3-4 times a week. My mother is in love with their croissants, especially the almond ones. And if a Chinese mother with a distinct bias against "Western food" loves something outside her zone of comfort, you know that it's worth your time to check it out.
No need to go on the Strip or travel to France because Bonjour Bakery gives you authentic, world-class French cuisine, pastries, and bakery items at such a reasonable price. Best of all, it's local! I have nothing but positive things to say about this neighborhood gem. They do tend to run out of some items quickly, especially the almond and chocolate croissants. But a lovely girl, named Hannah, recognizes my voice when I speed dial them in the morning to set aside two for me please. =) The service is really great, but maybe a tad understaffed during crazily busy lunch hours. I've seen people lined up out the door. The place does have a few dine-in tables, but is not large so I suggest avoiding popular hours such as 12-1pm if you want anything other than pastries, which can obviously be taken to go immediately. The "hot sandwiches" are actually just another name for panini's and I highly recommend the ham and cheese. MMMMmmm. Sorry, private moment.
Anyways, I could go on all day but you need to STOP. And visit Bonjour Bakery ASAP. I promise you will not regret it.
