| - What words come to mind when describing 5Church? Well, maybe... Hot, Chic, Artsy, Delicious, Fashionable, Trendy, Modern, Funky, Sexy, Elegant, and seemingly a little bit ahead of the curve for Charlotte. After opening what seems to be the largest doors in the world... we were promptly greeted by a 5Church hostess and got our seats within seconds.
An attention to detail, art and design runs rampant throughout the restaurant. After a slightly lengthy wait... we were finally brought a basket of slightly salted bread. Crispy and salty on the outside, fluffy and delicious on the inside. The crispy Szechuan pork belly and spicy cabbage came out next and was one of the best things we had for the night. The pork belly was nice and crispy, without being too fatty. The cabbage had the perfect crunch and acidity to balance the pork belly. The biggest draw back... there were only a couple bites of the pork belly :(
Ella started her meal with the Tomato soup with aged cheese and crouton. The soup was pretty good, but she's had better. What we did really like was the crunchy cheesy crouton that added a nice texture to the soup. The bacon pizza came topped with shaved vidalia onion and fromage blanc.. or in lamens terms, white cheese. This was a pretty good pizza for being an app, I don't think I would recommend it be anyone's entree because its pretty thin and not very filling.
The best plate of the night was the C.A.B. hanger steak with roasted potatoes, marinated tomato salad, and J-1 sauce. In case you're wondering what C.A.B. is, its "Certified Angus Beef". The steak was cooked perfectly and rubbed with an awesome blend of spices that added a mountain of bold flavors, especially with the J-1 sauce. The steak was served with crispy roasted potatoes which were really tasty, especially with the J-1 sauce, I could have done without the marinated tomato but it was pretty good with the J-1 sauce... oh yeah and the J-1 Sauce was pretty good too :)
The 5Church lamb burger with grilled onion marmalade, gorgonzola cheese and arugala came stuffed between a house-made sesame bun and served with a crispy confit potato. Coming in just barely as a strong third, the lamb burger was juicy, fresh, and a little bit of eye fluttering / toe curling deliciousness. The crispy confit potato sticks made for a cute start to a log cabin but might have been better (for me) if they weren't so "log like" and more fry like. Its not that I don't appreciate the originality.. its just that the best part (for me) is the crispy exterior, not the squishy potato interior. The smaller the fry the more crispy and less squishy there is :)
The chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream and cherries was not on the menu, but probably will be soon because it was delicious. The cake was super moist and topped with gooey rich chocolate glaze and cooked cherries. The ice cream (which i am pretty sure was home made) was the perfect addition to the rich chocolate cake and made for a great dessert. The smores trifle was on point and looked delicious but the depth of the cup made for a difficult mixture of equal flavors. Each bite was either too chocolatey, too marshmallowy, or too graham crackery.. even if none of those are real words you get the point.
5Church left a memorable impression on us and we definitely recommend you check it out.
