| - This review is strictly for the cafeteria at the new Henderson Hospital. I work close and decided to stop in to look at the new facility while on my lunch break. The hospital itself is absolutely beautiful-it looks more like the lobby of an upscale hotel than anything else. Employees are friendly and helpful and I had several people ask me if I needed help finding anything.
I stopped by the cafeteria to see if they offered anything that sounded good for lunch. I was in luck! It seems they have 1 or 2 (on this day 2) lunch specials to choose from. On the day of my visit, they were offering either a gyro or grilled chicken. With either entree came two sides and the choices on those were roasted potatoes, grilled veggies or orzo. I opted for the gyro with veggies and orzo. I also got a bottled water and my grand total was less than $6.00! The gyro was good, certainly not as good as one I'd get at Paymon's or another dedicated Greek restaurant but it was much better than I was expecting it to be coming from a hospital cafeteria! The orzo was delicious and the grilled veggies were a good mix of different veggies - carrots, green beans, squash, etc. To say I was impressed would be an understatement. It seems that in additon to different daily specials, they also offer pizza, salad (with a pretty substantial selection of add ins) and a few other basic lunch options (I think maybe I saw cheeseburgers on the menu?). They also have a good selection of chips, fruit, pastries and drinks (including one of those awesome Coke machines with a gazillion drink options). Everything was fresh and tasted wonderful.
The cafeteria itself is on the small side with about 6 booths, 5 or 6 booth/table combos and maybe 10 tables. I think there was an outdoor seating area as well. There's a large TV there that had national news on and one wall of the cafeteria is entirely floor to ceiling windows with a long table holding dispensers of ketchup, mustard, bar-b-que sauce and mayo, knife, spoon and fork dispensers and baskets with packets of picante sauce, A1 sauce and a few other sauces that I honestly don't recall. There are napkin dispensers located throughout. Despite it being right around the lunch hour, it wasn't too busy and I was quickly able to find a seat at a clean table.
The only 2 things I'd suggest to improve was the fact that there was only two people working behind the counter. One was serving up the food and the other was the cashier. I was fortunate enough to come in at what happened to be just the right time as there was no line at all. However, the few people who came in after me had to wait for the previous guests food to be plated, which took quite some time. I think maybe two people serving and once cashier would have moved things along quite a bit faster. The other thing worth mentioning was the fact that I noticed it took them a long time to clean the few dirty tables throughout the cafeteria. It may have just been a case of being short staffed and it wasn't as if there were people waiting for a clean table so it wasn't that big of a deal.
All in all, while I never hope to be stuck at the hospital and be forced to eat the food there, I gotta say that if I was at Henderson Hospital, I don't think it would be bad at all! The hospital is beautiful, the entire facility clean and new, the staff is friendly and helpful and the cafeteria serves up some pretty good and inexpensive grub!
