| - I'd give it one and a half stars, because my partner got a great haircut here (by a different stylist than I wound up with), and he really liked the place. For him, he would say four stars. Sadly, I had a different outcome.
I came in person prior to booking an appointment to get an idea of pricing, as well as to show them my hair. I have very long (about waist length) VERY thick, dark brown, coarse, curly hair. It has always given hairstylists problems. As such, I like to be upfront about things.
The woman at the front desk gave me a time estimate for a color, just a few highlights at the bottom, cut and style (3-3.5 hours) and slotted me in for later in the week. She did NOT tell me she had put me with a junior stylist with only 3 months experience. If I had known, I would have asked for another stylist.
At my appointment, the stylist never even asked me what color I wanted my hair dyed. She first just said that she would do my roots to match my current color, when I had in fact requested a full dye job. I let her know this, but at that point, she had already mixed the color. I just assumed (rightly) that she would put some sort of dark brown shade on it. Not what I wanted, but whatever. I accepted that part.
Three hours into the process, and things were not going well. She had put in six or seven very thin highlight strands (that just disappeared in my hair). These had to be re-toned, so back under the sink and all that again. At this point in time I warned her that I had to leave in an hour to be at work.
She finally finished the second round of toning, and then proceeded to blow out my naturally curly hair with a paddle brush (wrong method). She also told me she would trim the ends after it had been dried...
Five minutes before I had to leave, and my hair was a poofy mess. I looked like I had been electrocuted. No style, no cut, just a fried mass on my head.
She did offer to have me come in another time to have it cut, but I'll be damned if I would trust her to come near my hair again. Never once did she suggest we skip to the styling portion so at least I could go to work with a nice blowout. She kept right on going with zero communication--for 4 hours. How absurd for me to leave the salon looking worse than when I walked in after all that time.
I spoke with a woman who identified herself as the manager. Nearly in tears, I explained my disappointment having to leave the salon looking embarrassingly awful. I had planned my next three days around having a nice blowout. I felt frustrated that I wasted four hours of my life for nothing more than a bad dye job and some orangey streaks underneath my hair. Rather than empathize and offer to have a DIFFERENT stylist fix it another time, she again suggested I allow the junior stylist to cut it. She also said if I left without paying I would be a thief because I stole from them. She was extremely combative, but finally relented and did not charge me for the ordeal.
I believe that the salon should have listened better when I came in to book the appointment, or at least told me that all they had was a junior stylist available. I also think their stylists need to communicate better and learn time management. Customers should leave the salon feeling good about themselves. My time is valuable, too.
