  • Many decades ago, before the proliferation of consumerism and retail chains that focused more on profit margins than on quality, people used to dress up and go to visit weekly markets to get their supplies and socialize with other members of the community. Now folks drive cars (some take transit), buy stuff they don't necessarily need, but require for social approval, and return without exchanging a word with anyone. Sad as the case may be, shopping malls are indispensable in today's consumer culture. With more and more commercials creating demands for hitherto unknown products or problems, the number of people blindly following the crowd to get their shopping fix, 'because you need to!', is constantly growing and so will the necessity of shopping malls. Okay, sorry, I forget that yelp is not the place to rant. Admittedly I have visited this mall on numerous occasions, mostly during the time (not long ago) as a new immigrant to the West, overwhelmed by the glitzy stores, dazzling lights and escalators everywhere (especially next to junk food stores). Yorkdale mall is an excellent venue for visitors to experience the shopping culture of North America, especially during Christmas time. From a functional perspective, the mall has good transit connections (subway, bus, GO) and the cinema hall is okay too. As for spending your money on retail purchases, there are tons of options but clearly I miss that point.
