  • My group and I stayed here for EDC weekend, which is a huge electronic dance event that takes place every summer at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. We chose Rio because this hotel was a shuttle stop for the festival and the price wasn't too ridiculous (it was $200/night for the weekend of the festival). I have so many regrets from choosing this hotel. I should have paid attention to the Yelp reviews but Rio was definitely a last minute decision for us - now that we know, we won't be returning next year! I can let an old hotel with outdated furniture slide but their shady practices / random "accidental" charges on my card were not ok! First, the hotel itself is very old. Some floors seem to be newer or more clean than others. Unfortunately we were stuck on a floor that was really musty and had dirty carpet. You can definitely tell that the Rio is pretty dated. Even the casino downstairs can not be compared to the more glamorous ones located in bigger hotels. It's also very old and seems to only attract elderly gamblers. Secondly, the location of Rio is pretty...meh. It's not technically on the strip, it's separated from the strip by a highway so we had to drive over to the strip area in order to do any of the "classic" Vegas things like go clubbing. We also had to drive to restaurants because Rio doesn't offer that many food options in or around it. (A taxi driver did tell me that the buffet at Rio was good but I didn't get the chance to try it). I can overlook both points above. What I can not get over was the complicated mess checking in and checking out of this hotel was. The front desk seems to always have a line in front of it because they don't utilize their entire desk space - only three employees seem to be attending to customers at a time so expect to wait a long time if you have any questions about your check in. The automated check in system works but doesn't help if you want to do anything other than simply check in. In my case, I had card issues and so I had to wait half an hour to talk to somebody. I'm not sure what other hotels in Vegas do but Rio does charge random fees. There is a resort fee and package fees. The resort fee is about $30 a night (it should be stated online) and $25 per package you get delivered to the hotel. Because of these random fees and Rio's practice of listing costs of nights individually, the receipt they give you at the end is a long mess so it can be difficult to miss something wrong on your receipt...but I'm getting ahead of myself and I need to talk about the entire mess from the beginning In my case, my friend booked two Rio rooms with her card online. When I went to check in for these rooms, Rio charged me for the rooms and not my friend's card. This was actually fine because Rio explained that they do not charge the full amount online initially in case the guest does not show up for their reservation. Eventually we talked to the front desk and managed to get all the charges put on her card...we thought everything was fine after that. Nope. For some reason random charges started appearing on both our cards and they ended up overcharging me and undercharging her. On top of that, we caught a lot of charges in the receipt that should not have been there. For one of the rooms, they charged about $60 total in small WiFi costs. We had this figured out with the front desk and the employee apologized and refunded our money. For another room they charged an extra $35 in resort fees that we did not discover until weeks later. This review has been very long but just trust me - do not stay here unless you want to deal with an old hotel and a front desk that apparently does not know how to correctly charge customers.
