| - My Driver's License was up for renewal ( #1- even numbered birth years are required to get the 8 year edition and #2- real ID starting in 2016- that is a another story in which I will go into detail) and I was dreading every second of it, the anticipation of waiting in a longggggggggggg line was stressing me out- there is no exception, has to be done in person, not via mail or internet. I held out for as long as I could, the day before my birthday, saturday; this was my deadline. So, before I left my house which is 5 minutes away, I used the DASH PASS (via texting), but not entirely sure how the whole process worked. When I got there, I was lucky to find parking in the last lane of the regular parking lot, and there was about 300 in line (I'm not exaggerating, either). As I was headed into the long line (almost reached the other side of the fence to the rear of the DMV office property), I heard someone else in line, say, "It says my wait time is one minute."
The line moved rapidly at 8 am. The security guard asked me if I used the texting/ Dash Pass, and when I said "Yes", he told me to sit down (inside). Once I was inside, there were few seats available. All counters were busy with people, and the information line was really long, too. The short line was the Kiosk line. Anyway, the automated female voice was calling out: "Now serving Text- and the last four digits of your cell number. (BTW, you have to respond via text, or else you lose your space in line.) It seemed to happen for me really quickly. When I got to the counter, the lady tells me about #1, which I knew about from the website (had my current DL, birth certificate, SS card, and she gave me a form to fill out), but didn't know about #2- the REAL ID conversion in 2016 (allow access into federal buildings, the standard ID does not; this is a country-wide conversion) so, she suggested that I go home, get my marriage certificate and two bills with my name and address, not older than 60 days. This way, I wouldn't have to come back and pay an additional $8.00. So all this new stuff about the REAL ID was not on the website. I decline. Tells me to fill out the form. So, I'm given ten minutes to do, except there aren't any pens available, so I go to the counter again (was really fast), and there I decide I will just go home and get all the stuff I need, and I have an hour to do all that. My line is rebooted into the system. I get home and I head back. I enter "J" to join the line again. I don't do this until I am fairly close the DMV office. Because I have just enough time to park, and boom, my number's called a few minutes after I re-enter the building; but at this point, there are no seats available, it's standing room only (told you that it was fast). Once I am at counter #3, that is the bulk of my visit, but I was so happy to get it all done. The lady, Joy, was very nice, and probably one of the nicest DMV clerks ever.
I would highly recommend that if you must go to the DMV, you use this Dash Pass (via text); so, now, that I have this information, I am passing this along to you.
If you don't need to stay in line, use the Kiosk, which is an additional $3, but it's so worth it!
