  • I have been a member of REI since 1994. You can call me OG I guess. It is a common problem in places like this for staff to act in ways that make customers feel dumb, or not really welcome. Kinda like a gear snob looking at everyone as a noob Over the years I have not really had that issue at REI. Today I did. I rolled in with my 3 kids to find some olukai flip flops. I could order them from amazon, but I chose to come in. My kids were super well behaved. They all sat on a bench and waited politely. I was very impressed because normally they are forces of natural destruction. An employee brought customer to sit down where my kids were, she looked around and made eye contact with me, basically implying she needed them to move. The thing is, there were several other benches free. She didn't have to evict my kids. Either way- I decided on a pair and gathered my crew. As I went to the front- I saw the jet boil display. I got one a couple of years ago as a gift but I think I was missing a few pieces. I looked at the display figuring out what I had and what I needed. An employee walked up and asked if I needed help- I tried explaining what I thought I needed. Instead of helping- the employee told me I was wrong and it would be dumb if I didn't have the parts he told me I should have. Yea- that's really awesome. 2 rando kids just convinced me to stop shopping at your store. I outfitted trips from summiting Hood to free climbing Katherine Gorge at REI. I've been a loyal client for almost 25 years. So I feel it's safe to tell you- your staff is rude. No one ever should act with such disrespect. In the field- hiking the Inca trails around Pululahua to the Kalalau trail on Kauai's north shore- gear snobs are always seen as A-holes. And as a parent, let me remind you that stores that make families feel unwelcome suck. I wonder what your mothers think about your manners. I bet your moms would have a thing or two to say to you if they were to see the way my kids were treated. REI- check your video records- this fully happened.
