I had a reservation for a U-Haul cargo van (they are an independent franchise). At the counter, we were informed that our rental would have a $550 deductible on the insurance policy. This ought to have been $150 according to the U-Haul website. I found this sketchy but proceeded nonetheless. I was driven to their lot on Dupont and was provided with a white cargo van without any U-Haul markings. When asked about this, the employee callously said "it's the same thing". We then proceeded with the body damage inspection. The vehicle was covered with scratches, on which the employee placed stickers with a little "X". At this point, I reviewed my contract and was surprised to learn that it was with "Decent Car Rentals" and not with U-Haul. At this point, it all started to make sense. They were accepting U-Haul reservations and renting their own equipment with their own sketchy damage appraisal system and inflated deductible. This was too sketchy for my liking so I refused possession of the vehicle and left. 10 minutes later I received a phone call from a guy claiming to be the regional manager of U-Haul (fyi it was 8 PM) asking why I refused to take the vehicle. He then offered me $50 off my next rental. Now, whether this was the real regional manager or not, I am not sure but I will be getting to the bottom of this.
