| - I attended this 2x-soldout airy (outdoor) event for the 2nd time last night and had fun both times. I attended their spring shows @ Arizona Science Center/Arizona Center. (Their winter shows are @ Talking Stick Resort, too far out of my league and I prefer downtown activity than the middle of nowhere.) Both times the weather was a perfect spring with no rain(whew). This year's better than last, partly because I got the VIP seating and the other is the fashion's more interesting & challenging & 'ground-breaking'(punk denim?) and the attendees improved with no hooting like they did last year (over the bikini'ed models, like they never saw it before??). And, they were polite, non-judgmental, mature, and easy to chat with- even the few kids in attendance. All ages from 5 to 80 attended. The doors opened @ 6 PM for pre-show lounging (they even had couches & chairs) / mingling / browsing / shopping the fashion vendors (clothes, jewelry,...). I purchased the sample skirt pre-show that the runway model wore strutting down the runway. There were no refreshments- just bottle water (me, the teetotaler)) & cash bar. This was a relaxed event where you could come as you were and dress whatever you'd like- both fancy & casual- just be careful wearing tall heels with that brick-cobblestone-y sidewalk and plushy grass (wink).
They had a DJ; last spring was a female singer/guitarist from Chicks with Picks. I prefer musicians/bands over DJs.
Miss Arizona Teen USA made her guest appearance.
There were 6 local designers and 5 beautiful & trained models each and the show lasted over an hour. They had local singer Yasmeen at the beginning of the show, and afterwards each designer showed a video intro of themselves before each showing. For this year's show, I enjoyed designer Vanessa Gonzales "neutrals" line and purchased that skirt the model wore.
They had an after-party for further mingling and meeting the models, etc., but I don't attend them since it was very late into the night (in downtown!).
The organizer in attendance was professional and seems to really have enjoyed headlining this type of event, which truly influenced the ambiance and level of zen.
There was security present but they must've been bored as they were not needed. That's how peaceable this event was.
However, if they'd pass out a survey, I'd put in to consider adding refreshments and perhaps eliminating getting in line to enter the runway (the line looked like general seating instead of reserved) but to just have attendees enter whenever they'd like instead of all around the same time (and letting media in first)- Arizona Center is not that spacious. And, to be prompt on schedule without much delay. I just rated a full 5-star because I understand it's grown to be a large event, and I don't know what large event is ever nearly uneventful. This is not a cheap event; yet, I got what I paid for, for the 2 spring shows. If you pay the VIP, it comes with a cool Swag Bag. If money's not an issue and if you are a fashionista like I am, give this local event a try, AND support downtown Phoenix (wink)!
