  • My wife and I recently purchased an 'investment residential property' in Tempe. We knew going in that the roof was at the end of its life so we factored that into our deal. Once we closed escrow I started researching local roofing contractors. I started with the company that re-roofed our own home about 5 years ago. Unfortunately, instead of dealing with the owners as we had back in 2010, they sent out a new employee. His bid was about 25% over my estimate and he could not return phone calls to discuss further. We moved on to two other companies, both of whom provided estimates within my target range. I did the usual due diligence with BBB and AZROC and both companies had acceptable scores. Then I accessed some credit reports and found both were 180 days late in paying their suppliers. I did not want to be the guy whose roofing job is delayed because his roofer's supplier has cut them off due to slow pay. I put these two companies on hold and, interestingly enough, never received a follow up call to check on their estimates. Back to the drawing board, I found Stell Roofing's Yelp reviews were all favorable. They also passed the BBB, AZROC and credit test. I sent an email via their website and Mike Stell called me that evening. We set an appointment for the next Saturday and Mike arrived on time and ready to inspect the roof. He found a couple of issues with the roof that the Inspection Company did not (another story for another time) and completed some minor repairs on the spot without even knowing if he would get the job. Mike's had all the roofing material information to assist me in the decision and his bid was right on target and I signed on the spot. He said he had work booked for the next couple of weeks but that he would call me as soon as he had a tentative date. I heard from Mike a week or so later and he had a July 8 date. I explained that we would be on vacation that week and would not be available. He said that was not a problem, they didn't need us on site and he anticipated completing the job in one day and that he would sent me ongoing updates on the progress. On July 8 my cellphone beeped at 6:15 AM. I was Mike with photos of the roof with the backside already stripped down to the wood decking. We anticipated some wood issues and he also sent those photos. Mike followed up all day with progress photos and advised that the wood replacement would push the job completion to the next day. The next day he sent me the completion photos shortly after noon. We arrived back in town on July 11 to find a very different looking house, the new roof really transformed the place. Mike did everything he promised, kept us informed, did not ask for any upfront money. His pricing was fair, the work was professional, completed on a timely basis and the jobsite was spotless after the job was completed. All contractors should perform at the level Mike Stell does but, sadly, very few do. I've dealt with a lot of contractors after owning property for 35 years in the Phoenix area. Mike Stell and his employees are the absolute best! You need to call him before making a commitment on a roofing job.
