  • I purchased my wedding dress in New York before moving to Arizona. I was desperately seeking a bridal salon that carried my designer's line and that would do my alterations because, let's face it, it was pricey and I did not want to go to just any ordinary tailor. I called ahead and asked Schaffer's if this was possible. They told me to come in and we could talk about it. To make the deal even better for them, I told them I would purchase my veil and shoes from their store, and even offered to pay EXTRA for alterations. I made an appointment and went to the store the same day. The receptionist was fairly nice when we came in and had even pulled the gown off the rack for me to put on while I tried on veils and shoes so I could get the full picture. What happened next is what made me give them 1 star. While I was excitedly trying on veils and accessories, another woman came out. I am not sure if she was the owner, manager, or the tailor; she was fairly petite and had long dark brown hair. I had found a matching veil that I LOVED (which also happened to be over $800) and asked her if I purchased the veil, if I could also get them to do the alterations. She immediately said they would NOT accommodate this request because of their "full schedule"; I would like to note that I went into the store in April, and my dress isn't even due IN until November because my wedding is in January 2017. Anyway, she next furrowed her brow and very snarkily asked me where I purchased my dress. When I told her Kleinfeld's in NYC (where I had been living at the time), she literally scoffed said "Oh, well, I have met all those designers and consultants who work there- I go to the runway shows in the city just like them". Had this comment been said in another tone, it might not have come off as rude. But to me and my mother who came along, she made it seem like I purchased my dress at some over-hyped and run-of-the-mill bridal salon, and that Schaffer's was more prestigious than Kleinfeld's. I NEVER implied where I purchased by dress was a better salon, and that Kleinfeld's was God's gift to brides. She simply asked a question and was less than thrilled with my answer. I wanted to say to her "Well, you don't have a TV show, and brides fly from around the world to go to Kleinfeld's. I don't see a line out the door here and I seem to be your only appointment today". But instead I politely smiled, said I might return and left without the veil, shoes, or an appointment for alterations. I won't ever give money to a bridal shop that makes me feel like I am on some bridal bandwagon because of where I purchased my dress, or like I am not worthy of setting foot in their "high class" salon. I was given the royal treatment at Kleinfeld's and the special attention that every bride deserves and left with amazing memories; I would rather fly back to NYC for my alterations than give Schaffer's a penny. Speaking of which, I actually recommend flying out to NYC if you have a chance to go dress shopping. Because Schaffer's prices ARE ridiculous. My dress was $425 dollars cheaper at Kleinfeld's; you can literally get a round trip ticket from Phoenix to New York for $200, go get the dress of you dreams, and be treated like the special bride that you are ALL while spending less money. PS: I found a salon that was more than happy to do my alterations. I also purchased a custom made veil (similar to the one I had tried on at Schaffer's) at this salon for $199.
